Check Your Credit Score To Keep Improving
A good way to keep on top of things when you want to improve your credit score is to check it regularly using an online service. You can get free credit reports online, but your score does cost something, as that’s a proprietary calculation. Often call FICO scoring, you’ll see changes and pick up things added to your credit more quickly if you stay on top of changes to your score. When you want to know how to improve your credit score, getting alerts when there are changes to your report and reading through your credit report to see things as they happen will help you avoid negative impacts to your score.
You will find that sometimes items get added to your history by mistake, such as a bill you paid never actually being recorded by the creditor. You may also see items that don’t below to you, but perhaps are the debts of a family member or relative. More common today unfortunately is identity theft, where your identity is stolen and used to charge up more credit using your name and information. If you’re working on repairing your credit, you don’t want this type of credit history to stop your progress.
If you see anything incorrect or unusual in the changes on your credit score or credit report, then you have a few steps you should take:
1) Get in touch with the credit bureau that prepared your report. Usually there is a place you can click in case you want to dispute an entry. Insert all of the information requested, and add any additional comments you have. If you can list dates the bill was paid and other information, include that as well.
2) Once you dispute an item, the creditor has thirty days to respond whether the entry is a mistake, or if it is legitimate. If it’s a mistake, the credit bureau will notify you of the result and that the item has been removed from your credit report.
3) You will see the change made to your report within thirty to ninety days of the disposition of the item. Many times, it happens even sooner, to change your credit score.
Staying on top of your credit is best done with a frequent check of your credit score. It’s affordable, and a good idea to protect your credit history.
