How to negotiate with creditors

One of the main things to do when negotiating debt settlement with your creditors is not to do it alone. There is many times that creditor’s take advantage of the fact that persons try to negotiate their debt without the help of an attorney. You may think that getting an attorney will be extremely pricey and will not be worth it for the amount of debt that you have to settle. That is not true and you can do it in one of two ways.

1. If you know and are close to someone who has some sort of legal background (paralegal or legal secretary) they can give you some good advice. They can also accompany you in person or conference on a call to the creditors.
2. You can hire a debt settlement attorney that will only charge you upon coming to a mutual agreement on the negotiation. This protects you if in fact even with the help of the lawyer the creditors don’t want to budge on their offer. A lawyer can also advise you on how to proceed if the negotiations have left you nowhere.

If you still decide to go it alone, here are some tips to help you fell less intimidated in their presence.

1. He/she is a regular person just like you and they are just doing their job as outlined by their superiors. They have no personal vendetta against you or to your situation.
2. As a result of realizing point 1 above, be welcoming and civil and not confrontational and defensive. A well-mannered and friendly attitude may just get you the deal you want and deserve.
3. Keep careful records of each conversation you have…the name of the person you spoke with was and what they informed you. The date and time are also equally important.

These tips should help you to lessen the burden of debt negotiation. Once you have a payment plan in place it is just a matter of making the payments on time and you will be well on your way to erasing your debt.
